The Punjab government officially approved the expansion and relaunch of its interest-free electric bike scheme for students across the province. This decision came during a high-level meeting of the Transport Department and the Punjab Masstransit Authority. Under the updated phase of the initiative, the provincial government plans to distribute 100,000 electric motorcycles within one year to ease transport issues for young citizens.
According to a report published by Dawn, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced that the provincial administration will provide a fixed subsidy of Rs 70,000 for each electric bike to lower the financial entry barrier for applicants. Official statements shared during the session detailed the precise cost breakdown. “The Punjab government will provide a subsidy of Rs70,000 per e-bike. Male students will pay a down payment of Rs14,000 and an interest-free monthly installment of Rs2,100,” the Chief Minister stated during the briefing.
Female applicants receive additional financial support under the revised framework. The provincial government will pay the entire Rs 14,000 down payment and cover all registration fees for female students. This means female students only need to cover the interest-free monthly installment of Rs 2,100 to acquire a vehicle. The administration also opened eligibility to government employees, allowing them to purchase electric bikes under similar installment options.
The meeting also outlined a broader plan to scale up green public transit across Punjab, including the deployment of 5,000 electric buses over the next five years. An electric bus manufacturing and assembly plant has already commenced local operations in the province. In the initial phase of the transport expansion, 1,500 electric buses will begin operating across 91 tehsils, covering divisions such as Gujranwala, Gujrat, Rawalpindi, Multan, Sahiwal, Bahawalpur, Dera Ghazi Khan, Faisalabad, and Sargodha.
The previous phase of the initiative utilized an online portal managed by the Punjab Information Technology Board, where candidates submitted their credentials alongside a valid motorcycle driving license or learner’s permit. The final distribution for the new 100,000-bike quota will follow a transparent verification process through the Bank of Punjab. Ahead of the formal launch of the full fleet, the chief minister ordered the immediate deployment of 61 electric buses across 28 districts, with specialized routes starting early in regions like Kot Addu, Talagang, and Taunsa Sharif.
