Reports from supply chain channels indicate that Apple plans a substantial physical alteration for its upcoming flagship smartphones.

The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are set to receive a physically larger and thicker rear camera module to accommodate massive imaging adjustments.

Industry sources point to a mechanical variable aperture system as the primary driver behind this structural growth.

According to details shared by supply chain tech tipster Fixed Focus Digital on Weibo, the main camera module on the iPhone 18 Pro series will see a thickness increase of approximately 2 millimeters.

This extra depth allows Apple to fit complex moving parts required for a physical aperture blade system.

Apple analyst reports published on MacRumors align with these measurements, noting that early dummy units of the iPhone 18 Pro Max show a total thickness at the camera plateau reaching 13.77 millimeters, an increase from the 12.92 millimeters found on the previous generation.

The camera base alone is said to expand from 11.23 millimeters to 11.54 millimeters to hold the updated lens array.

A variable aperture allows the phone lens to mechanically adjust its opening depending on light levels.

Current iPhone models operate with a fixed f/1.78 opening on the primary sensor, which remains static regardless of environment. The mechanical system allows internal blades to narrow down in strong sunlight to optimize sharpness, or expand completely in dark environments to maximize light intake.

This structural requirement forces a trade-off in thickness, as the motor and layered blade assemblies take up far more vertical and horizontal space than traditional fixed lenses.

Apple is also reportedly pairing this mechanism with a large 48-megapixel 1/1.12-inch stacked sensor supplied by Samsung, which demands extra room inside the chassis.

Writing on the scale of these updates, Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman stated that the upcoming series will offer “some of the biggest camera hardware upgrades in the lineup’s history.”

These complex mechanical upgrades carry a steep production cost.

Supply chain reports from Asia indicate that the manufacturing costs for this variable aperture main camera system will be roughly 50 percent higher than current sensor arrays.

This cost elevation suggests a potential price hike for the retail units upon launch.

Apple is planning a split launch timeline for the 18-series ecosystem, where the premium iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and a new foldable design are projected for a late September announcement, with standard variants delayed until the following spring.

Apple’s shift toward a bulkier form factor for its top-tier devices indicates a deliberate segregation in product philosophy.

Separate models like the upcoming thin chassis variants prioritize minimalist aesthetics and portability, yet the Pro family targets maximum performance.

Display panel manufacturers Samsung Display and LG Display have already commenced production operations for the screen panels to meet the assembly schedules.
